James L. Speyer, M.D.
Professor of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine
Associate Director of Clinical and Hospital Operations,
NYU Cancer Institute Medical Director, NYU Clinical Cancer Center
As Medical Director of the NYU Clinical Cancer Center, Dr. Speyer provides leadership and inspiration to a multidisciplinary team of specialists placing patients at the center of its highly collaborative model of care. NYUCCC has ushered in a new era in cancer care allowing patients to benefit from the latest advances in research, technology, clinical expertise, and support services all under one roof.
Dr. Speyer specializes in medical oncology with a particular emphasis on breast and ovarian cancer. Among his numerous publications, he authored seminal research on the use of dexrazoxane to prevent adriamycin cardiotoxicity. A graduate of Harvard College and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Speyer joined NYU School of Medicine in 1980 following fellowships in hematology at Columbia University, Presbyterian Hospital/Harlem Hospital and in oncology at the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health.
With warmth and modesty, he has an ability to lead younger and long-tenured physicians through the ever-evolving world of oncology — whether using technology to enhance patient safety and accuracy or encouraging physicians to expand their participation in outreach and education. Dr. Speyer continues to fight the war against cancer while somehow always keeping a focus on the role of hope, dignity, respect, and survivorship.
Pamela Schein Murphy has a close personal connection with Dr. Speyer. Over twenty years ago, Dr. Speyer treated her own father for cancer. Although her father lost the fight against the disease, Murphy has always admired and respected Dr. Speyer for his lifelong commitment to treating cancer patients with compassion and love.
Dr. Speyer resides in New York City with his wife and has three grown children.
